Criteria for becoming a Nevada DPS Officer I

Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment.                
Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of appointment
The Department of Public Safety has a moral and ethical obligation to select only the most qualified   applicants for our law enforcement positions. Background investigations ensure that we select only those individuals of impeccable moral character and uncompromising integrity. 
You will not be appointed if any of the following applies to you:
  • Conviction of a felony in the State of Nevada or a conviction in another state which would be a felony if committed in this State
  • Conviction of any offense involving illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances
  • Conviction of D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime
  • Documented history of physical violence. 
  • Any illegal use of controlled substance within the listed time limits preceding the date of application:  A: Marijuana - Up to date of application. B: All others, including hallucinogens or experimental drugs, and steroid use - 3 years. This is to include prescribed medication not prescribed to the candidate schedule I, and II.
  • Intentional falsification, deception or omission of information during the application and background investigation process
  • You must be able to obtain a valid Nevada Class C driver's license and must have the ability to obtain both a radio operator's certificate and a radar operator's certificate.

Lateral Candidates: To qualify you must be Certified as a Category I Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy and have one year of law enforcement experience as a Category I Peace Officer; OR one year of experience as a DPS Officer I in Nevada State service.

Agility Run within 23.4 seconds
24 sit-ups within one minute
18 push-ups with no time limit
300-meter dash within 82 seconds
A mile-and-a-half run/walk within 20 minutes and 20 seconds

Ongoing physical fitness and written exam test dates are held weekly in Las Vegas and Carson City for qualifying candidates.
